The Lithium of Libya? Why Oil's Centralized Flow Is the Next Frontier for Blockchain

Last week, Libyan protesters shut down gas flows from the Wafa field. The very next day, the El Feel oil field resumed production. Two events, same country, same week. One message: the world’s most critical energy infrastructure is held hostage by a handful of armed factions and a volatile political calendar.

This is not a geopolitical analysis. This is a failure of centralized infrastructure design. And it is exactly the kind of failure that blockchain—when built with conscience, not just code—is uniquely positioned to address.

When I first started auditing smart contracts in 2017, I thought the biggest risk was reentrancy bugs. After three bear markets and a decade watching human systems fail, I now believe the biggest risk is trust concentration. Oil is the ultimate trust-concentrated asset: a single pipeline, a single government license, a single armed group, and millions of people lose heat. Libya’s pattern of protest-then-restart proves that the fragility is structural, not accidental.

What if oil extraction rights were tokenized on a transparent, permissionless ledger?

Before you call this naive, hear me out. During my DeFi education workshops in Cape Town in 2020, I saw something powerful. When we explained liquidity pools to local residents, they immediately understood the concept of shared risk and shared reward. They struggled, however, with the idea that a single bank or government could freeze their funds overnight. That moment convinced me that decentralization is not a techno-utopian fantasy—it is a practical insurance policy against single points of failure.

Libya's oil is that single point. The country produces roughly 1.2 million barrels per day, but production has swung wildly from zero to full capacity depending on who controls which valve. The El Feel field alone—operated by the National Oil Corporation in partnership with Eni and Repsol—has been shut down multiple times by local militias. Each shutdown costs the Libyan people millions in lost revenue. Each restart is a political victory for one faction.

Now imagine a blockchain-based registry for oil rights. Each barrel’s provenance, extraction, and revenue share recorded immutably. Smart contracts automatically distribute proceeds to verified parties—citizens' funds, local development accounts, even international creditors. No single faction can stop the flow because the financial layer runs on a distributed network. Protesters could still physically block a pipeline, but they could not hold the country’s treasury hostage. The economic damage would be contained to the physical disruption, not the entire fiscal system.

Based on my experience auditing early energy tokenization projects, most of them fail for three reasons:

  1. They ignore local power dynamics. Tokenizing an oil field owned by a state monopoly does not solve the problem if the monopoly itself is corrupt. The smart contract must be paired with a governance framework that gives real power to local communities.
  2. They focus on secondary markets instead of primary issuance. The real value is in issuing the original asset—barrels of oil—as tokens, not in trading derivatives on top. Without on-chain representation of the physical commodity, the system remains a casino.
  3. They underestimate the energy cost of the blockchain itself. The irony of using proof-of-work to manage oil is grotesque. Any viable solution must run on low-energy consensus, like proof-of-stake or delegated proof-of-stake, and ideally on a carbon-neutral network.

Yet the potential reward is enormous. When I worked with indigenous South African artists to enforce NFT royalties in 2021, we proved that automated, trustless revenue sharing is not just possible—it is protectively powerful. The same principle applies to oil: creators (the country’s people) deserve to own the value their resources generate, not just the crumbs left by intermediaries.

Every line of code is a hand extended in trust. The El Feel restart handed power back to the central government. But that government is itself contested. Real trust comes when the rules are embedded in transparent, auditable, community-governed code, not in the whims of armed groups or foreign patrons.

Contrarian angle: What if blockchain makes things worse?

Let me be honest with you. I have seen too many “blockchain for oil” white papers that are nothing more than marketing documents for token sales to European investors. Without proper community consent, tokenization could lead to a new form of extraction—digital colonialism. A foreign consortium could hold the private keys to a country’s oil reserves, effectively owning the asset without the messy business of operating a physical field. That is not decentralization; that is a new centralization disguised as code.

Moreover, the very properties that make blockchain resilient—immutability, pseudonymity—could be weaponized. A hostile state could fork the ledger, or a hack could freeze the entire supply chain. We saw in 2022 how even sophisticated DeFi protocols can collapse. A oil-backed stablecoin would be a tempting target for nation-state actors.

Education is the only true decentralized currency. Before any protocol is deployed in Libya or any fragile state, local communities must understand how it works. During my “Code & Conversation” sessions after the 2022 crash, I realized that emotional resilience and technical literacy go hand in hand. People need to feel they own the technology, not that the technology owns them. That requires open source, transparent documentation, and multilingual education—not just a medium article in English.

The way forward is not to replace oil companies with DAOs overnight. It is to start small. Use blockchain to track a single field’s output, with a pilot involving a few hundred local stakeholders. Measure trust gains. Audit the code publicly. Publish the lessons. Only then scale.

On my way to the Cape Town airport last week, I passed a Shell station. It felt like a monument to a centralized past. The Libyan protests are a reminder that such monuments are fragile. The future belongs to systems where power is spread, where trust is earned in commits, not in op-eds, and where every line of code is a hand extended in trust—not a fist.

Tracing the code back to the conscience behind it. That is the only audit that matters. And it starts with asking: who holds the keys to the oil? And who holds the keys to the keys?
